India’s first pet cab service turns one, goes online

News Category:

Posted on 12th Jan, 2015: Pet parents in Bengaluru would now be able to book a ride for their pooches online with India’s first cab services for pets – Pet Cab, starting their online service. Started about a year ago by 33 year old Santosh Shekhar - Pet Cab, as the name suggests, provides customized vehicles for comfortable transit of pets around the clock. The service covers all kind of transit needs ranging from trip to the vet or groomers to pick/drop to the kennel, airport or railway station, medical emergencies, even pet cemetery and out station trips!

It all started a year ago when Santosh (a technocrat and serial entrepreneur) realized that pet parents often faced hassles in trying to get an auto rickshaw while taking their pets to vet while those who had vehicles were worried about pets destroying their car’s upholstery and in some cases people simply didn’t have time to drop their pets off to a kennel before travelling out. Santhosh launched Pet Cab with a Cargo Omni and within 3 months his fleet had expanded to 3 cabs which now stands at 4 with one van marked specifically for emergencies. Being cargo vans, these vehicles have ample space in the back for pets to travel comfortably with smaller animals being transported in cages. The vans are also equipped with first aid kits, leashes and cleaning equipment such as mops, brushes etc as well as chew sticks and rubber balls to make pets’ ride fun. The parent can travel along with the pet and Pet Cab also provides a trained pet handler (at an additional cost) to manage jumpy or aggressive pets, if required.  In addition Santosh has also tied up with other cab providers in order to offer Qualis and Innova cabs for outstation trips (to nearby cities in South India) or airport drops. Intra-city service is reasonably priced at Rs. 100 for first 4 kms and then Rs. 23 per km during day time and Rs. 150 for first 4 kms and then Rs. 30 per km during night time. Given that a lot of times his cab is called for pet emergencies, Santosh is now planning to get his staff trained in handling an injured pets and doing basic stuff such as administering IV fluid or injections. The service has been well received by the pet parents (they are reported to be averaging 15-20 calls a day) especially the busy IT professionals and encouraged by the response Santosh is now working to expand his bouquet of services such as delivery of pet food and medicines. He has also launched his own brand of home cooked pet food – Canine Foods, providing freshly cooked food for pets – another gap in the pet services market in India. As a next step to the online launch, Santosh is now looking to expand his services to Chennai and Hyderabad as well.

We at Gingertail welcome this first of its kind taxi service for pets and see it as great step forward in making lives easier for pet parents, for we all know the kind of troubles one faces when it comes to ferrying our pets! Given that there are hardly any cab service providers who are willing to allow pets, the potential for Pet Cab is enormous as a transit solution for families with pets. Here’s hoping that we get to see Pet Cab in other cities soon!
